Amber-Dawn Bear
Robe - from Siksika Nation (Blackfoot) - is a Curatorial Work-Study
at The Walter Phillips Gallery. Bear Robe plans to pursue her Graduate
degree upon completion of her curatorial training at the Banff Centre.
Originally, from Calgary,
Alberta, Bear Robe studied as a visual Fibre artist at The Alberta College
of Art & Design, receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1996. Utilising
contemporary beadwork, fibres and mixed media, she composed traditional
Blackfoot imagery within contemporary context, exploring the relationship
between the past and present of Aboriginal culture. She has exhibited
works in various galleries in British Columbia and Alberta, notably
an installation in a group exhibition, Revisit, Recall-New Meanings
Echo the Past, at the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, Alberta. She has curated
an exhibition at the Glenbow Museum called LOGOINDIAN featuring Kevin
McKenzie. Recently, she curated an exhibition of works from the Walter
Phillips Gallery’s collection at The Banff Centre; Ksakom Itapiks
(Earth Beings) featured the work of Aboriginal artists Mary Ann Barkhouse,
Carl Beam, Jane Ash Poitras, Joane Cardinal-Schubert, Patricia Deadman
and Mike MacDonald
