Late one night I was driving home alone, this was during wet season in the Top End of Australia, big rain clouds had built up during the hot part of day. When night time came you could see the lightning flickering and striking through the clouds. As I drove off into the night heading back home I turned up one of my favorite songs from Warrumpi Band. As I thought back to the time I spent with my family out bush and the new stories I learned about our history and country, I also started to think about what’s going on in today’s society.
When you think about it and look at what’s happening today in Aboriginal Australia it makes you feel very emotional, you feel sad, angry, sense of hopelessness, you ask yourself questions about your life purpose, to many different things go through your mind, why are a lot of us giving up and turning to grog and drugs. Too many different feelings run through your mind when you look at the big picture, our country has a lot of sad stories and at times it feels as though we are lost in a system that has oppressed, sub pressed and depressed us.
Today a lot of people have become immune to seeing Aboriginal people living in poverty and struggling to survive, dying from preventable diseases, being locked up in prison, high rates of suicide, family fighting, child abuse. The list goes on and on, it’s a terrible cycle that we have been taught and it needs to be broken.
As I was driving and thinking and feeling no good about what’s happening in our lucky country I also remembered stories from elders about Aboriginal Warriors, hard people, who fought for this country and who cared for country and its people. Here in Australia not very long ago we had some very powerful Aboriginal Warriors and believe it or not we still do today.
This moment in time and this thought during my night time drive back home lead to the creation of Aboriginal Warriors Fighting Against Terrorism Since 1788.
Look back on our history, the foundation of Australia was built on acts of Terrorism, the first colonial settlers were experts in killing many 100s of 1000s of Aboriginal Australians. Not many people dare say that Australia's history was also built on acts of terrorism.
In doing this project I want to make people aware of our history by using strong words and to also touch briefly on what’s happening in today’s society in Aboriginal Australia. Not long ago Aboriginal people here were killed with guns, poisons & now in today’s society Aboriginal people are being killed again simply by the stroke of a pen, politics, bang finished.
Have a look at Aboriginal health, have a look at Aboriginal education, have a look at the prisons, have a look at our career paths, have a look at our purpose in life...
For a large majority of us we are taught that our specialised career path area is on Abstudy for life, Centrelink or working for CDEP.
The Australian Government talks about the evil terrorists who are out to kill anything that moves, but think about this for moment, our own government contributes to acts of terrorism for Aboriginal Australians simply by the stroke of pen. History is repeating its self but in a different way for Aboriginal Australia, Bang Finished...
