After almost a week of discussion at the 2nd International Indigenous
Youth Conference, its time for delegates to leave the city and experience
Canadian Aboriginal campaigning on the ground.
Were headed to Sutikalh, a permanent camp about three hours northeast
of Vancouver in the Cayoosh Mountain range.
In the year 2000 after a decade of failed negotiation the traditional owners of the area, the St'at'imc people, established Sutikalh as a means to protect their lands and culture from development.
The name comes from the St'at'imc winter spirit of the area, and even in Summer the peaks are snow-capped, and the rivers are fed by a melting glacier.
They are fighting a proposed all-season ski resort, and the supporting infrastructure that comes with it.
So why is it that the Community is trying to save Sutikalh? |
