Biography:
Jonathan Jones, b. 1978.
A member of the Kamilaroi and Wiradjuri Nations, Jonathan currently lives
in Bronte, Sydney. Jonathan is a practicing installation artist, working
consistently within collaborations. Receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts
from the University of New South Wales at the College of Fine Art in 1999
Jonathan has gone on to lecture at many of Sydney's Universities. Jonathan
is currently working on various exhibitions, nationally and internationally,
working within an analytical Pacific and Indigenous paradigm. In 2002
Jonathan received the New South Wales Indigenous Artists Fellowship to
further his practise.
Between 2000
and 2002 Jonathan held the position of curator at Boomalli Aboriginal
Artists Co-optative Ltd in Annandale. His main area of interest is to
break down the stereotypes and preconceived ideas of Aboriginality and
to highlight the damage this ignorance is causing within Aboriginal and
non-Aboriginal communities in order to replace it by celebrating of the
diversity of Aboriginality. During his time at Boomalli Jonathan initiated
and co-curator a cultural exchange program in 2001 between Boomalli Aboriginal
Artists co-operative and Urban Shaman Inc. in Winnipeg, Canada. Jonathan
currently works at the Art Gallery of New South Wales as Co-ordinator
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Programs. In addition he is
casually engaged as an independent curator for various institutions including
the Sydney Opera House and Ivan Dougherty Gallery, Paddington Sydney.
Recently
Jonathon has been working with landscape architecture, Pittendrigh Shinkfield
and Bruce on the on the Wilson Brothers Site project in Redfern. Jonathan
has worked with the youth of the inner-city environment at PACT theatre
in Enmore and has been exhibiting at Performance Space, Sydney, RMIT,
Story Hall, Melbourne, Art Space, Wolloomloo, Sydney and Artbox Sherman
Gallery, Paddington Sydney and The Contemporary Art Foundation of Auckland
New Zealand.
